Solar Attic Fans to Improve Home Comfort & Efficiency
Expert testing to ensure your fuel-burning appliances operate safely, efficiently, and reliably.
What are solar attic fans?
A solar attic fan is a roof- or gable-mounted ventilation unit powered entirely by a built-in solar panel. When sunlight hits the panel, the fan activates and pulls hot, stagnant air out of your attic, allowing cooler outside air to flow in through your soffit vents.
In Southeast Idaho, attic temperatures can climb well above 140°F during summer months, and that heat radiates down into your living space and forces your cooling system to work harder. A solar attic fan actively removes that heat without adding a dime to your electric bill.
What's included:
Site evaluation to determine optimal fan placement based on your roof orientation and attic layout
Proper flashing and weatherproof sealing to protect against rain, snow, and wind-driven moisture
Professional installation of a solar-powered attic fan unit with integrated photovoltaic panel
System testing to confirm adequate CFM output for your attic's square footage

Our Process
We follow a rigorous process to ensure your attic fan is installed correctly and performs as expected.
Assess
We evaluate your attic size, current ventilation, and roof orientation for ideal placement.
Position
We cut a precise opening and mount the fan where it will move the most air.
Seal
We flash and waterproof the installation to handle Pocatello's snow loads and wind.
Test
We run the fan and measure airflow to confirm it meets ventilation requirements for your space.
The Long-Term Benefits
Solar attic fans help regulate attic temperatures by removing excess heat and moisture, without increasing your energy bill.
Reduces Attic Temperature
Reduces attic temperatures by up to 40°F during peak summer, which means that it lowers the cooling load on your HVAC system and can reduce energy bills during the hottest months.
solar-powered
Operates on free solar energy with no wiring, no electrical permits, and zero ongoing operating costs — the fan runs whenever the sun is out, which is exactly when you need it most.
Reduces Moisture
Reduces moisture accumulation in winter by keeping air moving, which protects your roof sheathing, insulation, and framing from the mold and rot that Southeast Idaho's temperature swings can cause.
Common Questions
Everything you need to know about Solar Attic Fans
Will a solar attic fan work during Idaho winters?
Yes. While the primary benefit is summer heat reduction, solar attic fans also run during sunny winter days and help vent moisture that accumulates from daily household activities. This is important in our climate, where attic condensation is a common problem from October through April.
How is this different from a traditional attic fan?
Traditional attic fans are wired into your home’s electrical system and add to your utility costs. Solar attic fans are self-contained — no wiring, no electrician, no ongoing energy expense. They’re also quieter and simpler to install since there’s no electrical work involved.
How many solar attic fans does my home need?
It depends on your attic’s square footage. A single unit typically handles 1,200 to 1,500 square feet of attic space. For larger homes, we may recommend two units. We size this during the initial assessment so you’re not over- or under-ventilating.
Do solar attic fans work on cloudy days?
They do run at reduced capacity on overcast days. That said, Pocatello averages over 200 sunny days per year, so the fan operates at or near full capacity the majority of the time. On the cloudiest days, your attic also isn’t gaining as much solar heat, so the reduced output matches the reduced need.
Will the installation void my roof warranty?
When installed correctly with proper flashing and sealant — which is how we do every job — solar attic fans should not void your roof warranty. We follow manufacturer specifications and local building standards. That said, we always recommend checking your specific warranty language, and we’re happy to walk through it with you.
